In December of 1957, Elvis recieves a notice of draft from the U.S. Government. Elvis thought that this would ruin his music success. Colonel Tom Parker re-assured him that it will still be there when he gets back. The Colonel kept Elvis' music alive while he was serving by creating albums for the king. The notice terrifies Elvis for his mother, Gladys, was very ill with Acute Hepatitis. He didn't want to leave her side. On March 29, 1958; Elvis is assigned basic training in Fort Hood, Texas and he is stationed there for 6 months. On June 10, 1958; after his basic training was through, Elvis has a recording session and it will be his last session until 1960. Elvis recieves news that his mother was not doing well. Elvis' father, Vernon; told Elvis that he should come and see her for she might not make it. Elvis took the first plane back to Memphis on emergency leave to be by her side. When he got there, she was tired and very weak. He kept on praying that she would get better, but instead she died right there on August 14, 1958, the day after Elvis left. On August 25, 1958; Elvis returns to Fort Hood.Elvis takes a train to New York then boards the USS Randall to sail to Germany. On October 1, 1958; he arrives in West Germany and will remain there for 18 months. When arriving in Europe, he was surprise to see the fans there were as happy to greet him as they were in the U.S. In November of 1959, Elvis meets a girl named Priscilla Ann Beaulieu while stationed in Germany. While Elvis Is in the military, he becomes more and more closer to Priscilla. In 1960, Elvis Starts the year off with a promotion to Sergeant. On March 2, 1960; Elvis is officially discharched from the Military and returns from Germany. Elvis then starts recording on his first album since his military adventure labeled "Elvis Is Back". While in the Army, Elvis picked up the art of Karate. On March 21, 1960; Elvis recieves his first degree black belt. In April of 1960, he began his 5th movie which is post-army called "G.I. Blues". This movie is about a young boy in the army just like himself. Paramount and Elvis thought it would be a perfect "Comeback" movie after serving his 2 years in the service.
